Community planning with Ngati Paoa

Ngati Paoa was historically located throughout Tamaki and on Waiheke, Ponui, Rataroa, Pakatoa and the wider Gulf islands of Tikapa Moana o Hauraki to Mahurangi. The Ngati Paoa iwi trust is currently completing its treaty negotiations and has expressed a real interest in using the SEED programme to engage with whānau to develop a set of objectives and identify projects on a community roadmap.

Working in partnership with Auckland Council’s The Southern Initiative which has an explicit remit to champion, stimulate and enable social and community innovation, SEED New Zealand began working with the community earlier this year. Living and working in the community for more than a month the team facilitated a number of interviews and workshops before preparing and presenting the final Ngati Paoa roadmap in September.

The roadmap has received strong support from whānau and SEED is about to facilitate a number of new workshops in 2017 including a marae based new venture startup programme for three new Paoa projects.

In addition, a one day workshop will be facilitated to build support from a number of different government and NGO agencies, the business and tertiary education sectors to explore and agree an action plan for the delivery of an additional six cultural, social and environmental projects.
